6 Tips for Conquering Writer’s Block

Writer's Block
I woke up today, sat in front of the computer and then began to stare blankly at the screen. For the life of me, I couldn’t think of a solid topic or concept to write about. It’s not that I don’t have anything to write about, it’s just that I can’t wrap my thoughts around any one particular thing enough to make a coherent article. Then it hit me; why not write a bit about coping with writer’s block? Perfect!

Throughout my time writing on this blog and my entire life writing I’ve found a few tips that can help to break your mind free of writer’s block.

1. Think about your audience – Sometime when I get stuck it’s because I’m thinking too much about what everyone will think of my ideas and articles. The key to get past this is to think about your target audience. Who is your ideal reader? What does s/he like? What do you want to say to him/her next? Then ask yourself if your audience would find the article interesting or helpful.

2. Forget about being a writer – Stop worry about whether or not you are cut out to be a writer. I’ve never found myself to be a particularly compelling writer; however by starting this blog, I’ve found that a number of people will/want to read my words. The key here is not to over think things. Stop thinking about if you are a writer and just write.

3. Find your spot – If you haven’t already, try and find your “spot”; the place where your creative juices just spill over. For some this can be your home office desk and for others it may be the table in the corner at Starbucks. Sometimes by associating a specific place or area as lucky or creative, you can come back to that spot and immediately feel inspired.

4. Talk to others – This is always a good idea when you are lacking writing ideas. In the case of internet blogging, I’ve always found it helpful to read through some posts on other blogs. Either I will find a post I can respond to or it will push my mind in a new direction I hadn’t though of.

5. Take a break – This may be the simplest of solutions. Just get up and go away from the computer or paper for awhile. Consider taking a walk or reading a book or newspaper. Sometimes just letting go for awhile and getting your mind off everything will be enough to get the ideas flowing when you get back.

6. Have some fun – Writing doesn’t have to be completely serious and informative all the time. If you don’t have anything to write about, consider a splash of humor or writing about something a little less serious. You still get to write something and you can have some fun doing it as well. It’s a win win situation.
