6 Tips for Increasing RSS Feed Readers
It’s always nice to see my RSS feed statistics increasing. It must mean I’m doing something right and that people are actually interested in what I have to say. It’s great, but how do I keep that number rising? Well, besides writing quality posts there are a few tips that can help:
1. Join FeedBurner – It’s always a good idea to run your feed through them. You can get statistics about your readers and add a couple of cool features to the feeds and your blog. Feedburner will even make sure your feed is compatible with their SmartFeed feature.
2. Show It All – Make sure you have your blog set to show “full text” feeds. Most users will find it annoying to read partial feeds where they have to visit your website to finish reading.
3. Make It Easy – let your readers know about your RSS feed whenever and wherever possible. Add a short sentence at the end of your posts, something to the effect of “If you enjoyed this post, please consider subscribing to my RSS feed!” I’m considering adding this into my blog soon.
4. Contests & Prizes – Most people will participate if there is a prize involved. Consider running a Top Commentator contest, generally you will see a spike in interest on your blog which in many cases translates to more subscribers. Another option is to offer a free ebook or program for download after subscribing to your feed.
5. Make It Visible – Make sure you show off your subscribe buttons. Don’t toss an RSS link in the footer and call it a day. Make your RSS buttons easily visible and as close to the top of the page as you can. The more visibility the easier time people will have clicking it.
6. Exchanges – Feed exchanges or feed trains are other options to increase your readership, but they aren’t as legitimate because people subscribe for some benefit to them, not because they are interested in your blog.

Similarly, if you’re looking to increase traffic for comments, I suggest making sure your blog is set up to include an RSS comments feed link as well as the RSS comments feed within the
linktag of the HTML.For example, this blog only includes the following:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS 2.0" href="http://www.erikkarey.com/feed/" />I suggest adding another line if you hope to promote more commenting within the blog:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS 2.0" href="http://www.erikkarey.com/comments/feed/" /> -
