Flip That Website

Flip This HouseOne of my favorite shows on TV is “Flip This House” on A&E. For those of you not familiar with the shows concept, I will explain. Basically it’s follows a company that purchases broken down/damaged houses for cheap, renovate them within a week or two and then put them back on the market for profit. The concept intrigues me and it’s something I think I want to get into later on it life.

My point for bringing that show up is because the same concept applies to websites. Another way to make a quick buck can be to flip websites. When it comes to websites, you need to look for websites which haven’t had SEO done to them, aren’t being promoted and if you are lucky, owned by someone who doesn’t realize its value and potential. If you find all of these things, then you have the potential to make a good profit.

The first step to website flipping is finding the website you want to flip. This is generally the hardest step. You need to find a website you can get for a lower price, but also one that has the potential to do much better. You can start your search at SitePoint’s MarketPlace and DigitalPoint’s Selling Forum, however in many cases these sites are owned by webmasters who know what the site is worth (hard to find bargains). What you should consider doing when looking for sites is to check out smaller forums where people might be a little less experienced.

A few things to consider when looking at websites to flip is first, are they listed in DMOZ? Many webmasters give websites listed in DMOZ a much higher price value that those which are not. If you can find a DMOZ listed site for cheap, chances are you can make a profit off of it. When you find a site of interest, make sure to go through the site and write down what you could do to improve it and how long you think it would take. The idea behind website flipping is getting a fast return, so if it’ll take a year or two to fix it; then it might not be right for flipping.

I’ve done two website flips in my time working on the internet and I’ve been moderately successful. I purchased one site for $50 and sold it 2 months later for $120 and then purchased another site for $300 and sold it for $350 one month later. Not nearly the profit I am looking for, but it’s a start and I’m certainly still learning.

Has anyone else had any success with website flipping?

Interesting concept, Erik. I’ve never actually looked at the SitePoint Marketplace before you posted this (although I have heard of it), and it looks like a spectacular resource. I’m thinking I might have to try flipping a website myself since my background is mostly in Web development. I’m always interested in seeing how others code compared to me too, since I feel that it’s a good way to learn something new. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve been looking into this recently. A friend of mine recently put down 28000 for a website. He has increased revenue enough to make it worth at least 35000. I bought in for 3500 (10% of what he values it at). It looks like that is about 21 months revenue. If we don’t increase the revenue any more, I’ll make my money back from revenue in less than 2 years and still have all the equity left in the web site. It’s a lot less risky than investing in stocks.

I wonder if the bigger bets are where the money is?

I’ve found most of flippable websites on DP, however I’ve found a few on the small lesser known forums. You just have to search for the deals.
