I used to code from scratch, but after trying a few frameworks, I realized how much opportunity for improving speed, readability, and overall supportability I was truly missing out on. I'd recommend CakePHP just out of what I've tried, but there are plenty of frameworks I haven't tried. For most projects I find myself creating the apps from the ground up. Although the concept of a framework does sound appealing I have yet to play with any of them. I've been using CakePHP, as it simplifies the whole coding process and utilizes the MVC architecture. I'm always looking for alternatives though, as it's interesting to learn about what's out there.
