The Do-It-Yourself Sense of Accomplishment
When it comes to creating my own websites, I definitely like to do most, if not all of the work myself. However if you read my post “Outsourcing - Know Your Limits” you would also know that when it comes to design work, I find myself outsourcing more often than not. Nevertheless, there is something to be said for doing all the work yourself. Not only do you save the money you would have spent on a designer, but you also get that sense of accomplishment that you did it all.
What made me write about this was some automotive work I did this past week. The job was to replace a faulty water pump in a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. Now I could have gone to a mechanic (“outsourced”) and been charged anywhere from $400 to $800 at a minimum or I could take on the work myself. Of course I chose the later and with parts and some related costs it ended up costing somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 to replace. Monetary savings aside, this project taught me a lot about the sense of accomplishment that comes with doing things yourself. It might have been quicker and easier for a mechanic to do the work, but looking back on it, I would still have done it myself.
That experience taught me the value of doing things myself and has inspired me to try to take on more of the work myself when it comes to my websites. I have to ask myself the question “Am I outsourcing because I can’t do it or I don’t want to do it?” If it’s because I don’t want to do it, I know now that I should try anyways because in the end the website will be more valuable to me. Outsourcing is a great tool when used correctly, but if you think you can do it yourself, at the very least, give it a try. You’ll be surprised how great it feels to do everything yourself.
