Using FeedBurner Pro to Your Advantage

Erik Karey Aug 23rd, 2007 24 Comments

When Google bought Feedburner back at the end of May they decided to give the Feedburner Pro features away for free. I initially thought nothing of it as I felt just fine with the amount of statistics I was already receiving via my normal FeedBurner account. However, about a week ago I decided that I would enable the Pro features and see what I was missing out on and I’m glad that I did!

What is Feedburner?
If you blog you no doubt produce an RSS feed that is an aggregate of your latest posts. All by itself it is just fine in terms of usability, but Feedburner provides additional tools and features to enhance your RSS feed, track statistics and publicize your feed. Additionally they offer an RSS feed advertising network for those high volume bloggers. I would highly recommend that every blogger signup for Feedburner and install the FeedSmith plugin (If running WordPress)

What’s Feedburner Pro?
For as long as I’ve used Feedburner, they’ve always offered a Pro service for $4.99/mo. However when Google bought Feedburner back in May, they decided to give the feature away for free!! As I’ve said, I never thought much about it, but I recently enabled the features and was glad that I did. What does Pro offer? Well mostly it offers more detailed statistics about your feed and readers.

FeedBurner Pro Statistics

As you can see above, Feedburner Pro shows you not only how many views articles are getting from your feed, but also how many times a person clicks them to get to your actual website. Additionally each individual item can be isolated for even further details about what RSS reader was used and daily view totals.

Why is it Important?
There are good reasons for using Feedburner’s Pro features. With the detailed stats you can see which articles are getting viewed and more importantly which articles are getting click-throughs to your actual blog. By monitoring this data, you can find out what types of articles are popular and which types of headlines get the most click-throughs to your website. By getting more readers to your website you are increasing your earning potential.

Earning money online is more than just building a website and tossing some advertising onto it. It’s about knowing your customer (reader) and analyzing statistics to better tailor your product (content) to maximize profit ($$$). Go ahead and enable Feedburner Pro if you haven’t yet. At $0.00/mo you can’t go wrong!

It was quite nice to give it away for free, I didn’t know how nice the stats really were until I took advantage of them.

I love the Feedburner Pro services! You can never have enough information about the work you do (whether it’s a blog, a product, a company, etc), and Feedburner sits nicely with my roster of stat tracking tools.

The one site I use far more than Feedburner though is Stat Counter. It’s a great real-time alternative to Google Analytics, which can be a pain due to its 1-day delay. I use it most often to see what pages are currently viewing the most and where people are coming from (which seems slightly more comprehensive than Feedburner’s).

I love the MyBrand pro service. I was lucky enough not to set up my current blog until after Google had released this feature for free. Now I have no dependancy on Feedburner. :D

I tried enabling feedburner pro, but it doesn’t seem like I get a lot of clicks. It also may be because I don’t have a lot of RSS readers :(

Oh I never knew that feature was there and I’ve been using Feedburner Pro all along! It took me a while to find it, but when I clicked on Item Use and then “last 30 days” I can see all my clicks! Another thing I just discovered yesterday was FeedFlare. It wasn’t until yesterday that I realized there weren’t any Digg/Stumble, etc. buttons displaying on my feed posts - they were only showing up on my site. So FeedFlare takes care of that for me!

Feeds are very useful for people like me who dont have much time to spend in visiting my websites just to see if there is an update. Instead of me visiting every website that i like tru feeds i am automatically updated whenever my favorite sites updates.

I’ve been using FeedBurner pro since I started blogging and it’s great. It helps you see what your readers are wanting to read. That way you know what kind of things to write about.
