Why Increasing the Number of RSS Subscribers on Your Blog is Important
I mentioned in my June Goals post that one of my goals for the month was to increase my RSS subscribers count to 50. As it sits now, I’m at 33 with a little less than half a month to go. Although many seem to think that RSS feeds are primarily beneficial to the user, having a large number of RSS subscribers is equally beneficial to your blog in my eyes.
When you look at the number of subscribers to your RSS feed, as a blogger, you have to think that all (or at least most) of those people are interested in what you have to say. It’s rewarding to see that with all the time you put into writing your blog that someone is actually on the other end reading it. As a relatively new blog, my subscriber count is low when compared to giants like John Chow (5000+ subscribers), but the fact that over 30 people care to read what I have to say is more than enough to keep me motivated.
Although your feed numbers are motivational they can serve greater purposes, specifically the money making kind. If you didn’t know, feeds can be monetized in a number of different ways. By inserting your own affiliate links or using any one of the feed advertising networks out there. (Pheedo, Textlinkads, Feedburner to name a few) Before you throw ads into your feeds though, you need to have a solid number of subscribers not overdo it with the ads. Feeds with ads can be a turnoff, so be careful not to push away your users.
Lastly, having a large subscriber base allows your readers to get your content quickly and in turn respond to it quickly. Having thousands of people read your latest blog will allow those people to come to your site and respond with comments and reactions which in turn generate more content for your site. The more content, the busier your blog looks and the busier it looks, the more people want to read it.
Many people are worried they won’t get any traffic on their blog if people just read their RSS feed. The counter-argument here is that it’s better to have them as RSS subscribers than nothing at all. There is no guarantee that they will come back once visiting your blog, but they will continue reading if they subscribe to your RSS and chances are they will visit your site again if you keep providing quality content through your feed.
Promote your feed, increase your readership and provide quality content. Everything else will fall into place.

RSS reader count tends to reflect loyal readers / visitors, since they want to see what you write when you write it.
I do think some people put too much emphasis on RSS readers, but it’s still an important statistic.
